Having been through the college application process with both of my daughters who attended Miramonte, I can say that there is really little interest from the counseling staff in getting Miramonte students into Ivy League or related schools. The office feels their main mission is to get kids into UCs. Extremely bright, well behaved students get essentially no attention from the counseling staff. Each year when my kids had their yearly meeting with their counselor, she said, "Good grades. Any questions? See you next year." The meetings lasted less than 5 minutes. I understand now why parents choose to send their children to private high schools; there they get the attention of the counseling staff, and the school is highly motivated to get their students into the best schools, so they are competitive in the private school market.

>>The protesters are primarily furious with the control corporate America exercises over the United States government and its political decisions. <<

Preach it, Sister! The 1% could care less about a bunch of nobodies protesting in the streets while they sit in their million dollars mansion. The fault lies with a Congress that is either corrupt or cowardly, but incompetent on any level. "There are 435 members of Congress and they should all be voted out. Except for my guy." Which is why "your guy" (or "gal") is elected year after year.

Ok, you did a pretty good job on some of this stuff. I have one argument though. our wheels are made of different kinds of polyurethane with a plastic or aluminum hub for the bearings. The only other thing i have a slight issue with is that you say the larger ones are strictly for speed. Quite often you will see professional riders(such as myself) riding a board that rranges from 34-42 inches long, and with varying wheelsbases. I have personally gone 60 mph on a 36.5" board. Otherwise not bad on the story. Great writing.

Good article, Tamar. State moneys are dispensed according to priorities set by the governor and legislature. You, Miramonte HIgh and the UC system are NOT of high priority to the politicians in charge obviously. The question is---what are you and other affected Californians gonna do about it?

When I moved to college, I had been doing P90X at home (a weight training/cardio home dvd regime) and there was no way I was going to stop just because I moved into a dorm. I was also afraid to work out in the campus weight room; I knew it would be mostly guys and I wasn't sure how they would respond to me being there. I can guarantee, however, that there is nothing to worry about. Like you, the guys are just there to work out and pump some iron. If they do look at you, take it as a compliment and continue on. Some have stopped me and tried to talk, but all you have to do is smile and let them know you're just there to exercise. In time, you'll get to know some people, and the guys will resepect you if they see you working hard like them. I think the hardest part of using the weight room is getting up the nerve to go in, but really there is nothing to fear :)
