The Miramonte swim team has begun working for another season of excellence. Although the “Super-Mats” season began less than a month ago, captains Kyle Weikert ‘12, Tennyson May ‘12, Charlie Wiser ‘13, Jenna Haufler ‘12, Kelly Noah ‘12, and Sam Swinton ‘12 have already begun reviving the Mats’ swim team spirit and family by organizing team dinners to introduce rookies and welcome back veterans, along with planning a team outing to a basketball game to cheer on fellow Matadors and support their previous coach.
“I am very excited for this season,” Swinton said. “We have a great group of athletes and we all have the same goals in mind that we are willing to work hard to reach.”
The team lost many key athletes last year to graduation. However, they also welcomed new swimmers, including Elise Goetzl ‘14, Tyler Kirchberg ‘14, Heidi Homma ‘12, Alicia Macler ‘12, Janelle Lescure ‘12, and Mark Coufal ‘12 that offer great promise to the varsity team.
“One of our goals is to have good team character both in the water and out of the water,” Weikert said.
The varsity and junior varsity teams practice Monday through Friday after school from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., and will begin morning workouts the week of Feb. 27 on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:45 a.m. to 7:15 a.m. Brad Allen and Trevor Rose coach the junior varsity athletes while Donnie Heidary and Jon Behnke coach the varsity athletes.
Team captains hope to lead the team to both DFAL and NCS victories this season.
“We hope to make the top 3 in NCS,” Haufler said.
The teams’ first meet is on Thursday, March 15 from 3:45 to 7:45 p.m. at Dougherty Valley. They compete against Dublin at a home meet on Friday, March 23 from 3:45 to 6:00 p.m. and against Alhambra away on Tuesday, March 27 from 3:45 to 6:45 p.m.
